English Day Celebration
The English Language Day was observed with great enthusiasm and active participation by both students and English Department teachers. The programme was organized with the objective of promoting linguistic competence, literary appreciation, and creative expression among learners.
The celebration commenced with a recitation of ‘The Unknown Girl in the Maternity Ward’, a poignant first-person narrative poem by Anne Sexton that explores themes of motherhood, separation, and emotional conflict. The participant rendered the poem with remarkable clarity, precise diction, and effective voice modulation. The expressive delivery and nuanced portrayal of the speaker’s inner turmoil and tenderness enabled the audience to connect deeply with the emotions conveyed, thereby capturing the true essence and intensity of the literary work.
This was followed by a speech highlighting the significance of the day and the relevance of the English language in the contemporary global context. The speaker emphasized the importance of English as a medium of communication, academic advancement, and cross-cultural interaction.
A choral recitation of ‘The Spider and the Fly’ a tale about a cunning spider who uses flattery to lure a vain fly into his web by Mary Howitt was subsequently presented. The coordinated effort, appropriate voice modulation, and synchronized delivery reflected thorough preparation and teamwork among the students.
The programme further featured a dance presentation based on grammatical concepts, specifically verbs and subject–object pronouns. This innovative approach facilitated experiential learning and reinforced grammatical understanding in an engaging manner.
The event also featured a Book Walk based on ‘Rapunzel’, a well-known German fairy tale. A student, elegantly attired as the titular character Rapunzel, captivated the audience that reflected the character’s distinctive features, particularly the long hair. The participant presented the character with confidence, incorporating expressive gestures and brief narration to bring the story to life. This activity successfully fostered imagination, creativity, and an interest in reading.
The programme concluded on a successful note, achieving its intended objectives of enhancing language skills and encouraging literary engagement. Overall, the celebration proved to be both educative and enriching, leaving a positive and lasting impression on all participants and attendees.
